Joints, coves and drains: the details that make a resin floor last
Why do resin floors need coves?
A radius cove creates a seamless, curved junction between floor and wall, so there is no corner where dirt and bacteria can collect. It is essential in hygienic areas.
What size anchor grooves does a polyurethane floor need?
Around 6 mm deep × 6 mm wide for a 6 mm system and 9 mm × 9 mm for a 9 mm system, cut 25 mm either side of expansion joints, saw cuts and floor edges.
How much material does a resin cove need?
A 75 × 75 mm cove uses about 1.8 litres per linear metre of ASP-creteVS or ASP-epoxyCove.
How to read a chemical resistance rating
What does a chemical resistance rating of 5 mean?
A rating of 5 means excellent resistance: no significant deterioration after long-term contact with the chemical.
How are ASP's chemical resistance ratings tested?
30 mm × 30 mm samples are cast at the product's prescribed thickness, cured for 7 days and fully submerged in the test chemical at 20–25°C.
Does temperature affect chemical resistance?
Yes. Elevated temperatures accelerate chemical attack. For example, ASP's solvent-free epoxies rate 5 for 10% sulphuric acid at 20°C but 0 at 100°C.
Is discolouration counted as chemical damage?
No. Discolouration is not classified as deterioration if the sample's integrity remains intact.
Flooring for food and beverage processing
What is the best flooring for a food processing plant?
For wet, high-stress processing areas ASP specifies ASP-creteRT, a HACCP certified heavy duty polyurethane cement floor. Dry and semi-wet areas suit ASP-creteMD or ASP-creteSL, with ASP-creteVS for coves and walls.
Are ASP's polyurethane floors HACCP certified?
Yes. ASP-creteSR, ASP-creteSL, ASP-creteMD, ASP-creteRT and ASP-creteVS are HACCP certified.
Which floor can be steam cleaned in a food plant?
ASP-creteRT and ASP-creteVS at 9 mm are fully steam cleanable and resist spillages from -40°C to 120°C.
What floor should go in a freezer or cold room?
ASP's selection guide specifies ASP-creteRT for refrigerated storage areas.
Preparing concrete for a resin floor
How strong does concrete need to be for an epoxy floor?
ASP's systems need sound concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 25 N/mm² and a minimum tensile strength of 1.5 N/mm².
How dry must concrete be before applying a resin floor?
The substrate must be dry to 75% relative humidity and free from rising damp and ground water.
How do you remove laitance from concrete?
Laitance is removed by blasting, scarifying or diamond grinding, depending on the system specified.
Can a resin coating go on damp concrete?
ASP-coatWBE, a water-based epoxy seal, can be applied to damp or green concrete in light duty areas. For other systems, ask ASP about moisture tolerant options such as ASP-primeDamp.
How long does a resin floor take to cure?
How long before I can walk on a new epoxy floor?
ASP's solvent-free epoxy floors take light foot traffic after 16 hours at 20°C.
When can forklifts drive on a new resin floor?
Heavy duty traffic can use ASP's epoxy and polyurethane cement floors after 48 hours at 20°C.
How long does a resin floor take to fully cure?
Full chemical cure takes 7 days at 20°C for ASP's epoxy, polyurethane and vinyl ester floors.
How long is the working time of an epoxy floor coating?
At 20°C, ASP's solvent-free epoxies have a working time of 15–20 minutes once mixed.
How to clean and maintain a resin floor
What is the best way to clean an epoxy floor?
A floor scrubber or vacuum scrubber-drier with a low-foam neutral detergent is the preferred method. It scrubs, supplies clean water, removes the dirty water and dries the floor in one pass.
Can I use a mop on a resin floor?
Use a mop and bucket for spillages only. For routine cleaning it tends to spread a film of dirty water across the floor.
What cleaning chemicals damage resin floors?
Avoid solvents and phenol-based cleaners, which degrade resin floor surfaces, and never mix cleaning chemicals or exceed the recommended dosage.
Can resin floors be steam cleaned?
Only systems designed for it. ASP-creteRT at 9 mm (FeRFA Type 8) is fully steam cleanable; check with ASP before steam cleaning any other floor regularly.
Epoxy, polyurethane or vinyl ester: which resin floor do you need?
Is epoxy or polyurethane better for a food factory?
For wet food processing areas with temperature swings and aggressive cleaning, ASP specifies its HACCP certified polyurethane cement floors such as ASP-creteRT and ASP-creteMD. Epoxy systems are used in the dry, non-processing areas of the facility.
What temperatures can a polyurethane floor handle?
ASP-creteRT is resistant to spillages from -25°C to 100°C at 6 mm and from -40°C to 120°C at 9 mm, where it is also fully steam cleanable.
When should I use a vinyl ester floor?
Use vinyl ester where chemical and heat resistance matter most: acid and alkali bunds, tank farms, chemical stores and loading bays, and battery charging bays.
Do polyurethane floors change colour?
Yes. ASP's technical data notes that the colours of its polyurethane range will yellow over time, especially in direct sunlight or under high intensity lighting.
How to choose the right resin floor for your facility
What should I consider when specifying a resin floor?
Consider the type and degree of traffic, temperatures, chemical contact, wet or dry service, slip resistance, aesthetics, ease of cleaning, substrate moisture, the time available for application and curing, site conditions at installation, and cost.
What is the best floor for a warehouse with forklifts?
For dry warehouses with forklift traffic, ASP specifies self-smoothing epoxies such as ASP-coat1000 (1 mm) and ASP-coatSL (2 mm), both rated for forklift and hard plastic-wheeled traffic.
Who should be involved in choosing a resin floor?
BS 8204-6 recommends full consultation between the end user, the flooring contractor and the resin manufacturer during the design and construction stages.
The 8 types of resin flooring, explained
How many types of resin flooring are there?
Synthetic resin flooring is classified into eight types: floor seal, floor coating, high build floor coating, multi-layer flooring, flow applied flooring, resin screed flooring, heavy duty flowable flooring and heavy duty resin flooring.
What is the thickest type of resin floor?
Type 8, heavy duty resin flooring, is trowel-finished and aggregate filled at around 6 mm and above, and is effectively impervious throughout its thickness. It is rated for very heavy duty use with a life expectancy of 10–12 years.
How long does a resin floor seal last?
A Type 1 floor seal, up to 150 µm thick, has a typical life expectancy of 1–2 years under light duty conditions.
Which ASP products are self-smoothing?
ASP-coatSL (2 mm epoxy), ASP-coat1000 (1 mm epoxy) and the polyurethane ASP-creteSL and ASP-creteMD are self-smoothing systems.
