The eight types of resin flooring

Synthetic resin floors are classified into eight types, each with its own performance. The type sets the thickness, the traffic it can carry and how long it lasts. Open a type to see the detail and the ASP systems that belong to it.

1Floor sealDuty LDUp to 150 µm

Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent or water borne.

Life expectancy
LD: 1–2 years
Cleaning
Wash and vacuum dry
ASP systems
ASP-coatWBE, ASP-coatUV
2Floor coatingDuty LD/MDUp to 300 µm

Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent free.

Life expectancy
LD: 2–3 years, MD: 1–2 years
Cleaning
Wash and vacuum
ASP systems
ASP-clearcoat, ASP-creteCoat
3High build floor coatingDuty MD300 µm to 1000 µm

Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent free.

Life expectancy
MD: 2–4 years
Cleaning
Mechanical scrubber-driers, but not with regular use of abrasive pads
4Multi-layer flooringDuty MD/HD2 mm

Aggregate dressed systems based on multiple layers of floor coatings or flow-applied floorings, often described as "sandwich" systems.

Life expectancy
MD: 3–5 years, HD: 2–3 years
Cleaning
Rotary brush vacuum machine
ASP systems
ASP-coatSL
5Flow applied flooringDuty MD/HD2 mm – 3 mm

Often referred to as self-smoothing or self-levelling flooring, with a smooth surface.

Life expectancy
MD: 6–8 years, HD: 3–4 years
Cleaning
Gloss: wash and vacuum. Matt: scrubber
ASP systems
ASP-coatSL
6Resin screed flooringDuty MD/HD4 mm

Trowel-finished, heavily filled systems, generally incorporating a surface seal coat to minimise porosity and provide a wearing surface.

Life expectancy
MD: 10–12 years, HD: 5–7 years
Cleaning
Scrubber-drier
ASP systems
ASP-screedPTS
7Heavy duty flowable flooringDuty HD/VHD4 mm – 6 mm

Having a smooth finish.

Life expectancy
HD: 8–10 years, VHD: 5–8 years
Cleaning
Scrubber-drier
ASP systems
ASP-creteMD
8Heavy duty resin flooringDuty VHD6 mm

Trowel-finished, aggregate filled systems, effectively impervious throughout their thickness.

Life expectancy
VHD: 10–12 years
Cleaning
High pressure washer, cleaner or scrubber
ASP systems
ASP-creteRT, ASP-creteHF

Bar lengths use a logarithmic thickness scale. Life expectancy varies with application and service. Classification after the FeRFA guide to the selection of synthetic resin flooring.

Duty classes

LDLight foot traffic, occasional rubber-tyred vehicles
MDRegular foot traffic, frequent forklifts, occasional hard plastic-wheeled trolleys
HDConstant forklift traffic, hard plastic-wheeled trolleys, some impact
VHDSevere, heavily loaded traffic and impact

Each type in brief

What is a FeRFA Type 1 floor seal?

Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent or water borne. Duty: LD. Typical thickness: Up to 150 µm. Life expectancy: LD: 1–2 years. ASP examples: ASP-coatWBE and ASP-coatUV.

What is a FeRFA Type 2 floor coating?

Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent free. Duty: LD/MD. Typical thickness: Up to 300 µm. Life expectancy: LD: 2–3 years, MD: 1–2 years. ASP examples: ASP-clearcoat and ASP-creteCoat.

What is a FeRFA Type 3 high build floor coating?

Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent free. Duty: MD. Typical thickness: 300 µm to 1000 µm. Life expectancy: MD: 2–4 years. ASP examples: ASP-coat500, ASP-coat1000 and ASP-coatPU.

What is a FeRFA Type 4 multi-layer flooring?

Aggregate dressed systems based on multiple layers of floor coatings or flow-applied floorings, often described as "sandwich" systems. Duty: MD/HD. Typical thickness: 2 mm. Life expectancy: MD: 3–5 years, HD: 2–3 years. ASP examples: ASP-coatSL.

What is a FeRFA Type 5 flow applied flooring?

Often referred to as self-smoothing or self-levelling flooring, with a smooth surface. Duty: MD/HD. Typical thickness: 2 mm – 3 mm. Life expectancy: MD: 6–8 years, HD: 3–4 years. ASP examples: ASP-coatSL.

What is a FeRFA Type 6 resin screed flooring?

Trowel-finished, heavily filled systems, generally incorporating a surface seal coat to minimise porosity and provide a wearing surface. Duty: MD/HD. Typical thickness: 4 mm. Life expectancy: MD: 10–12 years, HD: 5–7 years. ASP examples: ASP-screedPTS.

What is a FeRFA Type 7 heavy duty flowable flooring?

Having a smooth finish. Duty: HD/VHD. Typical thickness: 4 mm – 6 mm. Life expectancy: HD: 8–10 years, VHD: 5–8 years. ASP examples: ASP-creteMD.

What is a FeRFA Type 8 heavy duty resin flooring?

Trowel-finished, aggregate filled systems, effectively impervious throughout their thickness. Duty: VHD. Typical thickness: 6 mm. Life expectancy: VHD: 10–12 years. ASP examples: ASP-creteRT and ASP-creteHF.
